Calvary Day School

Southwest Elementary

Each grade learned how we can help prevent global warming. Below is a list of ideas we came up with to help prevent global warming and climate change.

How can we help to stop global warming?

-Don’t Litter

-Pick up litter and trash

-Turn off lights and other electronics to save energy

-Turn off water when we aren’t using it

-Reduce

-Reuse

-Recycle

-Make other people aware of global warming and climate change.

-Plant Trees and Gardens

-Use Reusable Water Bottles instead of plastic bottles.

Kindergarten and 1st Grade: (Penguins)

We learned about the causes and effects of global warming and climate change on the penguins.  We learned that pollution from factories and cars are contributing to global warming and climate change. We learned that the penguin’s habitats are being destroyed by climate change and it is causing the numbers of penguin populations to drastically drop, which means that penguins are dying and not reproducing like they should.

2nd Grade: (Polar Bears)

We learned about the causes and effects of global warming and climate change on the polar bears. We learned that pollution from factories and cars are contributing to global warming and climate change. We also learned that litter and trash help contribute to global warming.  We learned that the polar bear’s habitats are being destroyed by climate change and it is causing the numbers of polar bear populations to drastically drop, which means that polar bears are dying and not reproducing like they should. We also learned that the ice caps are melting and it is causing shorter winters and longer summers for the polar bears and the polar bears need the ice in order to hunt for food for the summer.

4th Grade: (Sea Turtles)

We learned about the causes and effects of global warming and climate change on the polar bears.  We learned that pollution from factories and cars are contributing to global warming and climate change. We also learned that litter and trash help contribute to global warming. We learned that because of the ice caps melting, the sea levels are rising and washing away the home beaches where sea turtles go each and every year to lay their eggs.  Trash in the oceans are also killing sea turtles, especially things like plastic straws and plastic can drink holders.  Sea turtles have GPS systems programmed into their brains which helps them go to the same beaches each year to lay their eggs and because their home beaches are washed away due to the rising sea levels, the turtles are getting confused and not laying their eggs.  This is causing the baby sea turtle population to drop.  Not only this, but because the temperatures are warmer, more male turtles are being born. Cooler temperatures cause more female eggs to hatch and warmer temps cause more male eggs to hatch.  Because the climate is warmer, only males are hatching, which is causing a problem for future reproduction of sea turtles.
